The level of spam forced onto the SoC page was actually rather impressive. I didn't think the spammers had it in them to utterly drive me crazy. At first I started by simply banning outright their phrases, and enabling the proxy check thing. Then I got really tough, and forced all comments to be approved before being posted.
When all that failed, I tried some random add-on solutions to prevent the spam. No go. I still logged on to see 10-15 "approve me!" spams in my inbox every day. So, now, thanks to the wonderful technology in the hands of spammers worldwide, you can't tell the (obviously slacking, the last post was almost a week ago!) students how much you love their hard work.
Also hi. I'm Zac West. You probably don't know me, but I'm the guy who coded the Xtras webpage, and ends up doing most of the web work around here. Nice to meet you. ;-)
Edit: Okay, I've set up that Akismet plugin. Let's hope it's up to par with what you guys have said and can keep out the huge amount of spam.
Also, for the record, I utterly hate CAPTCHA systems. I can't stand them. Half the time, I myself end up entering the image wrong because of horrible overlays and I get tossed a fatal error that prevents me from then even using the website I'm trying to enter. Usually their images are so easy to process that it's just a joke that makes them think they have some form of security. I mean, "ASDF" in a straight line, in the same font, on a monotone background (or with minor defective filtering) is hardly a huge security force.
Do not post bugs or requests to the comments! Use Trac.

Comments:
In case you're wondering, we use WordPress on the SoC blog and Blogger here. That's why comments are still enabled here - different comment system, and so far, the spammers haven't attacked it yet.
I am getting tons of these approve me spams in my inbox recently as well on my blog. I'm considering just shutting it down until I find something that works.
You need Bad Behavior
http://homelandstupidity.us/software/bad-behavior
It can run at the domain level.
Also, a ton of info about it is located not only at the above link, but also the author's WP.com blog.

Trust me, I've been here with you before. Spam just sucks on blogs. Here's my suggestion: don't even bother with any fanciful CAPTCHA scheme, or random spam plugin to WordPress. Use Akismet.
My blog is pretty popular, and since I've installed Akismet (about six months ago now) I've blocked 3,354 spam comments and have only seen 1, possibly 2 spammed comments make it onto the site (which I just log in and mark as spam fairly trivially). Before Akismet, I tried everything. Akismet is the easiest to add to the site and, more importantly, is less of a bother to your visitors (there's no CAPTCHA to anger people). And the good part is that there's a really easy-to-implement WordPress plugin for it. Even better is that it has a fantastic API, so if you ever want to pull out of WordPress for it, you could probably interface with Akismet in virtually any language you choose.
So please, from one popular site to another, try out Akismet- you'll probably find that you love it. Good luck with it.

I find CAPTCHA systems constantly entertaining. Who knew crude Turing Tests would become a familiar part of life for so many people?
hi there! yeah, this just sucks!
anyway, i think I solved the problem (for now, installing both Akismet and Bad Behaviour together.)
you can find links and directions from my blog at this post:

By the way, kudos your your work on the xtras pages! It really rocks!
